Discovering the Charm of Old Village, Mount Pleasant

Just minutes from downtown Charleston, the Old Village in Mount Pleasant feels like stepping back in time. With its oak-lined streets, historic cottages, and waterfront views, this neighborhood blends history, charm, and a relaxed coastal lifestyle — all while being close to everything Charleston has to offer.

A Historic Fishing Village

Dating back to the early 1800s, Old Village began as a small fishing community along the Charleston Harbor. Today, many of its homes have been lovingly restored, keeping their original character with details like window shutters, brick pathways, vintage lanterns, and wide front porches.

Walking down Pitt Street feels timeless — traditional homes, picket fences, and neighbors chatting as they stroll by. Some streets lead directly to the waterfront, where you’ll catch glimpses of Sullivan’s Island or look across the harbor toward downtown Charleston.

The Coastal Lifestyle

Life in Old Village moves at a slower pace. You’ll see families biking, walking dogs, or relaxing on porches. The neighborhood is just a short stroll or ride from Shem Creek, where boat launches, paddle boarding, and kayaking are part of everyday life.

Shem Creek is also home to some of Mount Pleasant’s favorite waterfront restaurants. From casual bites to fresh seafood dinners, it’s the perfect spot to catch a sunset, enjoy live music, or watch shrimp boats roll in from a day on the water.

Iconic Landmarks

One of my favorite spots in Old Village is the Pitt Street Bridge. Once connecting Mount Pleasant to Sullivan’s Island, it’s now a peaceful place to fish, crab, or simply enjoy sweeping views of the harbor and the iconic Ravenel Bridge.

You’ll almost always find a breeze here — and locals gathered to relax, chat, and take in the scenery.

A Community with Heart

Beyond its history and beauty, Old Village has a true sense of community. The Pitt Street Pharmacy, open since 1937, is still serving milkshakes and sandwiches at its original soda fountain counter. Local boutiques, galleries, and the charming Post House Restaurant add to the neighborhood’s personality and sense of place.

Why Old Village Shines

The Old Village brings together the best of Charleston living — historic charm, a strong sense of community, coastal access, and convenience. Whether you’re drawn to the history, the lifestyle, or the incredible views, it’s one of Mount Pleasant’s true gems.
